MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY

Michigan International Speedway, located in the southeastern part of “The Great Lakes State”, has been a premier racing facility for 43 years. Built by Lawrence LoPatin, a Detroit developer, Michigan International Speedway (MIS) was built at a cost of $5 million. The first ever NASCAR race at MIS, took place on June 15, 1969. That first MIS NASCAR race was an exciting race one, as Cale Yarborough out dueled Lee Roy Yarbrough.
LoPatin’s American Raceways, Inc. went bankrupt in 1971.…and by 1972 was in receivership. In 1972, Roger Penske went to the Lenawee County Courthouse and purchased the deed to MIS for $2 million. Penske owned the racetrack from 1972-1999, and oversaw the expansion of MIS’ grandstands, raising the seating capacity from 25,000 to 125,000.
In 1999, MIS was purchased by International Speedway Corporation.(the current track owner) ISC has overseen many improvements and additions to the facilities at MIS. The results of these efforts have turned MIS into a great facility for both NASCAR driving teams and NASCAR fans.
In its current configuration, the racetrack is a super speedway (a track greater than 2 miles in length) and is a D-shaped oval, with 18 degree banking.
On most of the years since 1972, MIS has hosted two Sprint Cup races a year. 2011 is no exception, as on June 19th of this year, Denny Hamlin won the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400. Next up on the NASCAR schedule at MIS is the August 21st Pure Michigan 400. That race will start at 1 p.m. (EDT) and will be televised by ESPN.
